Bioplastic (Bioflex). A flexible, metal-free option built specifically for healing piercings.
Bioplastic — sometimes called Bioflex — is a biocompatible polymer, not a metal at all. Because it contains no metal whatsoever, it removes metal sensitivity from the equation completely, making it a genuinely good option for people with extreme sensitivities or reactive skin.
Its defining feature is flexibility. A fresh piercing swells as part of normal healing, and rigid jewellery can put uneven pressure on the tissue during that process. Bioplastic flexes with the piercing instead of against it, which is why it's commonly recommended as a retainer or first-jewellery option — particularly for nose, lip, and cartilage piercings, or in cases where a piercing is prone to swelling.
Bioplastic jewellery is:
- 100% metal-free — no nickel, no titanium, no risk of metal-related irritation
- Flexible — moves with swelling instead of pressing against healing tissue
- Lightweight and comfortable — ideal for extended or first-time wear
It's a slightly different material category from titanium and surgical steel — rather than a metal alloy standard, bioplastic jewellery is evaluated for biocompatibility and safe long-term skin contact. Please ensure that you have chosen the right size earrings for your piercing and that your piercing is suitable for a 16G/1,2mm gauge (standard size of cartilage piercings done by a professional piercer) before your purchase as we cannot exchange or refund earrings that do not fit your piercing.
