Why I tell people to check the metal first.
So here's what actually happened. I'd already had thirteen piercings by the time I sat down in that chair. I was booked in for three more, that was the plan. Then I got there and just... changed my mind and asked for five instead. A conch, two more helix, two forward helix, all in one sitting.
Only problem: I'd only brought three pieces of my own titanium with me, because I'd only planned for three. So the other two went in with whatever surgical steel the studio had on hand.
That first night was rough, not going to lie. Blood on the pillow, crust already forming, everything sensitive enough that just cleaning them made me wince. I'd been through it before though, so I knew it wasn't a red flag, it was just night one. I did the full routine - foam, rinse, dry, ointment, twice a day for the first week, then saline soaks once week two hit.
All five piercings, same exact aftercare. Nothing different. And by week three, three of them had calmed right down, exactly on schedule. But the two in surgical steel? Still angry. Still red. No different to how they looked in week one.
So I went back to my piercer and had those two swapped over to implant-grade titanium. And within days, I mean days, they started settling down right alongside the rest.
Nothing about how I was cleaning them changed. The only thing that changed was the metal. So if something's just not settling no matter how careful you're being, check the jewellery before you start blaming yourself.
