Choosing piercing jewellery material isn't a cosmetic decision — it's a biological one. The metal or polymer sitting inside your skin for months or years affects how your piercing heals, whether you'll react to it, and how it holds up over time. This guide is the starting point for that decision: what each material actually is, how it's regulated, and which one fits your situation.

Why Material Matters More Than It Seems

A piercing is an open wound for weeks or months while it heals, and the jewellery sits directly in that wound the entire time. Unlike a ring or a necklace, piercing jewellery has constant, prolonged contact with broken skin — which is exactly the condition under which metal sensitivities develop or worsen. Nickel in particular is notorious for this: someone who's never reacted to a nickel-containing watch strap can absolutely develop a reaction inside a fresh piercing, simply because the exposure is so much more direct and sustained.

That's why "hypoallergenic" claims on piercing jewellery deserve more scrutiny than the same claim on a fashion earring. The material spec is the whole story.

Titanium: The Safe Default

G23 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) is the same alloy used in surgical and orthopaedic implants, manufactured to ASTM F136 / ISO 5832-3. It contains no nickel whatsoever, which makes it the safest default for new piercings, known sensitivities, or anyone who'd rather not take the chance.

Beyond biocompatibility, titanium is lightweight (around 40% lighter than steel), corrosion-resistant, and completely tarnish-free. The tradeoff is cost — titanium is more expensive to source and machine than steel, which shows up in the price.

Surgical Steel: Durable and Dependable

316L surgical steel, manufactured to ASTM F138 / ISO 5832-1, is one of the most widely used materials in body jewellery — durable, affordable, and tarnish-free. The honest caveat: it's a nickel-containing alloy (roughly 10–14% nickel), tested to meet the EU Nickel Directive's low-release threshold. Most people wear it without issue, but "low release" isn't the same as nickel-free.

Surgical steel is the better fit once a piercing is fully healed and you already know your skin tolerates it — a second stud on a settled lobe, or anywhere budget matters as much as material.

Bioplastic: Built for Healing

Bioplastic (Bioflex) isn't a metal at all — it's a biocompatible polymer, which removes metal sensitivity from the equation entirely. Its defining feature is flexibility: it moves with a swelling piercing instead of pressing against it, which is why it's so often used as a retainer or first-jewellery option, particularly for nose, lip, and cartilage piercings.

It's not a like-for-like swap for titanium's shine and rigidity — think of it as purpose-built for comfort during active healing, often used alongside titanium rather than instead of it.

Which material is truly hypoallergenic?
