How to know what size post you will need?
Each piercing has a unique thickness of cartilage or tissue.
Consult our size guide below as a reference for standard size posts for different cartilage piercings.
Most Cura cartilage jewellery (helix, tragus, conch, rook, etc.) is 16G (Gauge or thickness) and designed for piercings done with a needle. Nose, nipple, and gun-pierced lobe jewellery use different gauges — see the sections below. *No returns or refunds for incorrect sizes purchased.
| Piercing | Recommended Post Length | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Helix | 6mm | |
| Forward Helix | 6mm | |
| Rook | 6mm / 8mm | Curved post |
| Conch | 6mm / 8mm | |
| Low Helix | 6mm / 8mm | |
| Anti Tragus | 6mm / 8mm | Curved post |
| Tragus | 6mm | |
| Upper Lobe | 8mm – 10mm | |
| Lobe | 8mm – 10mm | |
| Industrial | Speciality size | Custom fit — contact us to confirm |
| Daith | — | We recommend a segment ring instead of a flat back for this piercing |
All Cura cartilage flat back posts above are 16G / 1.2mm gauge and are designed for needle piercings — they will not fit piercings done with a gun. These are standard sizes for healed piercings; individual anatomy can vary, so consult your piercer or contact us if you're unsure. Internally-threaded posts (16G, 8mm) are also available separately for custom fitting.
Nose Jewellery — 18G
Cura nose studs and screws are 18G / 1.0mm, with a standard 6mm length and stone sizes typically around 2.5mm. This is a finer gauge than our cartilage jewellery, matching the standard for professional nose piercings.
Nipple Jewellery — 14G
Cura nipple bars are 14G / 1.6mm, thicker than cartilage jewellery to match the standard nipple piercing gauge. The standard bar length is 12mm, with 14mm also available separately for those needing extra room.
Gun-Pierced Lobe & Butterfly-Back Jewellery — 20G
For standard lobe piercings done with a piercing gun (rather than a needle), we offer butterfly-back studs at 20G / 0.8mm with an 11mm pin length and a secure butterfly clutch back. This gauge is specifically sized for gun-pierced lobes — our 16G needle-piercing jewellery will not fit a gun-pierced lobe without an appropriate adapter.

Not sure which gauge your piercing is? See our How to Measure Your Piercing Gauge & Post Length at Home guide, or check our full Piercing Size & Gauge Guide for an overview of every gauge we carry.

Why Titanium?
Why Titanium?
Titanium is the safest and most biocompatible metal for piercings. It’s completely nickel-free, hypoallergenic, and non-corrosive — meaning it won’t tarnish, react, or irritate sensitive skin. Because it’s implant-grade, titanium is the same material used in medical implants, making it ideal for both new and healed piercings. Light, durable, and designed for comfort — titanium lets your piercings heal beautifully and stay irritation-free.
How to use them?
How to use them?
Simply unscrew the decorative front, Use our labret liner to easily insert your flatback post through the back of your piercing. Then, hold the top with a clean piece of Prestik to keep it steady while you gently screw it on. Always screw in clockwise and unscrew anticlockwise.

Certified G23 Implant-Grade Titanium. Hypoallergenic, nickel-free, and safe for even the most sensitive ears.
G23 titanium (also written Ti-6Al-4V ELI) is the same alloy used in surgical and orthopaedic implants — bone plates, joint replacements, and pacemaker casings. It's manufactured to ASTM F136 / ISO 5832-3, the international standard for implant-grade titanium, which specifies exact purity and composition requirements. It isn't a marketing term — it's a verifiable material spec.
Titanium is chosen for implants because the body rarely reacts to it. That biocompatibility matters most for piercings: it contains no nickel, the single most common cause of metal-related skin reactions, so there's no guesswork around allergies — even for people with a known nickel sensitivity or a piercing that's still healing.
Beyond hypoallergenic performance, G23 titanium is:
- Lightweight — around 40% lighter than surgical steel, ideal for multiple piercings or larger pieces
- Corrosion-resistant and tarnish-free — won't discolour with sweat, water, or everyday wear
- Waterproof — safe to shower, swim, and sleep in
All Cura titanium jewellery is Certified G23 Implant Grade — the same specification used in medical implants — and comes with our 30-day Hypoallergenic Happiness Guarantee. Shop the full range in our Titanium Collection.

Good piercing jewellery only does half the job — how you care for a piercing, from the day it's done through to years of wear, determines whether it heals cleanly and stays comfortable long-term. This guide covers everything: getting pierced, healing, cleaning, troubleshooting, and everyday jewellery care once you're fully healed.
Getting a New Piercing
Two decisions before you're even pierced matter more than almost anything that comes after: how it's done, and how much it'll hurt. For any cartilage piercing (helix, tragus, conch, rook, daith, forward helix), insist on a professional piercer using a sterile needle — not a piercing gun. See our full breakdown in Piercing Guns vs. Needles.
Wondering what to expect pain-wise? Our Pain Scale guide ranks every common piercing site from least to most uncomfortable.
Cleaning a New or Healing Piercing
If your jewellery is in a fresh piercing, a little extra care during healing goes a long way:
- Clean once or twice daily with a sterile saline solution (or saline wound wash) — gently wipe away any crust from around the piercing rather than picking at it
- Avoid touching the piercing with unwashed hands
- Don't rotate or twist the jewellery while it's healing — this is an outdated practice that can actually slow healing and irritate the tissue
- Leave the original jewellery in for the full healing period before changing it, even if it looks healed on the surface
For the full step-by-step method — including exactly what to use and what to avoid — see our How to Clean a New Piercing with Saline guide.
How Long Does Healing Take?
Healing times vary significantly by piercing location. Lobe piercings typically settle in 6–8 weeks, while cartilage piercings like helix, tragus, and conch can take anywhere from 3 to 12 months — and each location has its own specific timeline and sizing schedule. See our Shop By Piercing guide for a full breakdown by location, including our detailed Helix healing timeline.
Is Something Wrong?
Some redness, mild swelling, and clear discharge are completely normal in the first few weeks. Yellow or green discharge, spreading heat, persistent sharp pain, or fever are not, and are worth acting on. For the full breakdown of what's normal versus what needs attention, see our Signs of Infection vs. Normal Healing guide.
Caring for Healed Jewellery
Cura earrings are made to be durable, waterproof, sweat resistant and tarnish free.
Studs are suitable for everyday wear and are also preferable for sleeping and showering.
We recommend that more elaborate flat backs and rings (i.e. curved marquise designs and multi-stone rings) are not worn while sleeping or showering (as far as possible) as this can cause the stones to loosen - save these for occasional wear and store them in a safe, dry place when not in use.
To prolong the longevity of your jewellery we recommend that you:
- Remove them when going to the beach, spa or pool
- Avoid contact with perfumes and chemicals
- Never use chemicals to clean jewellery
- To clean and remove body oil / residue buildup, use a microfibre cloth and warm soapy water to remove buildup and dust
- Store them in a safe place, these tiny pretties can get lost easily
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I clean a new piercing?
Once or twice a day with sterile saline — more than that can irritate healing tissue just as much as too little cleaning.
Is it normal for a piercing to still feel tender after several weeks?
Yes, particularly for cartilage piercings — many go through "rough patch" weeks partway through healing even when everything is progressing normally. See our Shop By Piercing guide for location-specific healing patterns.
Can I swim or shower with a new piercing?
Showering is fine. Avoid pools, hot tubs, and open water during the healing period, as they carry a higher bacteria load than a clean shower.
Do I need to clean fully healed jewellery too?
Not with saline — normal jewellery care (a microfibre cloth and warm soapy water occasionally) is enough once a piercing is fully healed, as covered above.
